Single of the Month: March

It’s been a difficult time to pick a Single of the Month this time, especially since the only thing we’ve heard as of late is the sound of Girls Aloud and the Sugababes tearing apart what used to be a good song! Yet, thanks to the likes of Take That, Kaiser Chiefs, and this month’s top choice, Gossip, we’ve still got something to talk about, so let’s get on with it, shall we?

Nobody could be more surprised about this being our Single of the Month than us.

Honestly, at first, we really really wanted to dislike this song for all its minimalist guitar-drum combinations and that noisy, head-smashing chorus. Turns out though, we absolutely love ‘Standing in the Way of Control’ for exactly the same reasons.

A tide of nimble guitar bobs atop a bouncing, one-two beat and is swept along by a gust of soaring, soulful vocals before crashing with brute force into that tidal wave of a chorus; all psychotic cymbals and disturbed beats.

And OK, so it took us a few listens to really appreciate it, but once we did, this infectious, excitable slice of pop-dance-disco-rock became a much revered favourite.

The Runners-Up

Take That – Shine

Take That solidify their transformation from boy band to, erm, man band with this buoyant number. It’s difficult not to like this song that sees Gary Barlow taking to the piano and making way for Mark Owen to –ahem- shine on lead vocals.

The Fray – How to Save a Life

If you’ve already read our review of The Fray’s album, you’ll already know how much we dislike it. Yet, give ‘em their due, this is a great song. Unlike anything else on the album of the same name, this is rich, powerful, bold and actually quite good.
