Single of the Month: January 2008

So, it’s a new year, a new month and a New Single of the Month. We made a New Years Resolution to stop rambling on so much in the introductions to these things. It probably won’t last long, so enjoy it whilst it lasts. Here goes!

Image: Kanye West and Chris MartinKanye West feat. Chris Martin – Homecoming

In all serious, this shouldn’t work; hip-hop superstar Kanye waxing lyrical whilst that woolly-jumper-wearing wally from the blandest band on the planet tickles those ivories with gusto. Yet the truth is, it does work, and it works amazingly well.

In fact, it’s Chris Martin’s addictive piano playing and soothing chorus that really got us hooked on this song. It’s so infectious and enticing and for reasons we can’t quite fathom, it reminds us of the Rocky Balboa films. Strange, we know, but what can you do?

Anyway, whilst all this is going on, we’ve got Kanye giving it some on the mic as he talks about the complicated relationship between he and ‘Windy’, or as we best know her, the ‘windy city’ of Chicago.

If this tune doesn’t hit number one once it’s physically released in early February, we’ll be quite surprised.

The lyrics are smart, the music’s sweet, and we’re in love. Now why can’t Coldplay do anything that’s at least a quarter as good as this?

The Runners Up

Mika – Relax
Remember when Scissor Sisters covered Pink Floyd? This reminds us of that, only better, bouncier, and loads more fun.

Lupe Fiasco feat. Matthew Santos - Superstar
What’s not to like about this song? It’s like a big ol’ pot of vocal loveliness.
