“Why don’t you guys review singles?” If
there’s one question we get asked more than any other here at The LINC
Online, it’s that. “After all,” you cry, “There’s so many great songs
out there that you never give the time of day unless they happen to be
on an album.”
Well, like the considerate folk that we are, we heard your cries and
decided to do something about it! Now obviously, if we reviewed every
single we heard, we’d never get the time to produce all the other great
stuff you’ve come to expect from us.
Yet what we can do is this, our brand new ‘Single of the Month’ feature,
where we’ll be raving on about the tune that’s been stuck in our heads
all month and taking a quick look at some of the other songs arousing
our aural senses. This month, we’ll take a look at a cracking tune by
Scottish pop-rockers Latonic.
Latonic – ‘Twisted Devotion’
Kicking
off with sharp little stabbing hooks that for some reason reminds us of
Sweet’s ‘Blockbuster’, ‘Twisted Devotion’, the latest single from
Scottish lads Latonic lures you into believing that you’re about to be
struck by some sort of modern glam-rock anthem.
What actually happens however, is that we’re blasted with something
completely different and infinitely better than we could’ve imagined.
Swirling drums swish under a cyclone of synths and super-sized hooks,
slamming together to create a track that adapts well to the current
climate of guitar bands playing dance-floor anthems, whilst at the same
time retaining it’s own unique appeal.
Like a small shirt on a fat man, ‘Twisted Devotion’ is fully fleshed
out. It’s a big, bold and brilliant pop-rock tune, brimming with
confidence; with enough dance appeal to fill the floors and a slightly
dark atmosphere that makes it a great choice for a late night drive down
a dark, dirty highway.

Latonic, and check out our ‘In The Hotseat’ section in a few weeks for
an exclusive interview with frontman Grant Nicol.
The Runners Up
Just Jack – 'Starz in Their Eyes'
Alright, so we know this was released in January, but ‘Single of the
Month’ wasn’t around then, so we’re bending the rules a bit. Plus, come
on, you’ve gotta admit that this is a top tune. Sort of like a more
jolly Mike Skinner waxing lyrical about TV talent shows such as X-Factor
over some jangly, funky rhythms. How can anybody not like this song?
Fall Out Boy – 'This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race'
Apart from the fact that Patrick Stump is, as always, annoyingly
incoherent, there’s not much we don’t like about this stomping romp of
emo-punk, combining FOB’s trademark catchiness with something of a new
aggressive streak, and we quite like it.
