We’ll be honest, we were going to save
ourselves the tough challenge of picking the one song that rocked the
most this month in favour of trawling the Single of the Month archives
and coming up with a Single of the Year.
But then something happened, and we heard three great songs that we just
had to mention.
Yet since this is our final pick of the year, we decided we’d write a
double-whammy, and give you our top tunes of the year too. First though,
it’s our choices for December.
Newton Faulkner – Teardrop
We’ve always loved this song, and no matter who covered it (with the
exception of Mika, who recently slaughtered ‘Teardrop’ on Radio 1) we’d
probably rave about it on ‘Single of the Month’, but there’s something
about the way Faulkner has taken the Massive Attack classic and made it
sound even more beautiful that has made us fall deeply, madly in love
with the song all over again. It’s lush, it’s lavish, it’s deep and it’s
delicate, but moreover, it’s brilliant.
The Runners up
Nickleback – Rockstar
We’d all but forgotten about Canadian rock crooners Nickleback until
they came out with this storming ode to the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle.
It’s a fantastically beefy tune that’s a million miles away from some of
the more dreary dross we’ve been used to from Chad Kroeger et al.
Kate Nash – Pumpkin Soup
Quite what this sublime jam, with it’s quirky refrain of ‘I just want
your kiss, boy’, has to do with pumpkin soup is anyone’s guess, but we
love it all the same. In fact, with every single Ms. Nash releases, we
like her more and more.
The LINC Online Single of the Year
Anemo – Pray
It’s been two months since we last looked at this song and we still love
it. Fantastically booming bass and sharp-yet-satin-like vocals make it a
firm favourite. Seriously, let this song into your life, let it get into
your head the way it got into ours. It’ll be the best thing you ever do.
The Runners up
Newton Faulkner – Teardrop
It’s been oh, five minutes since we last looked at this one, but hey,
it’s that good we just had to mention it twice.
Kate Nash – Foundations
Ms. Nash is growing us more and more each month, and we still think this
is a great little tune.
