Wigan Little Theatre, Directed by Bill
Collins
Review by Gemma Worthington
Where could you find a beautiful Princess, a charming young sailor, two
Dames and a camel? Why on stage at Wigan Little Theatre of course. (Oh
no you can’t!!) This festive season, Bill Collins has written another
fun packed pantomime which will appeal to all.
Sinbad the Sailor tells the story in true panto style of good always
overcoming evil with slapstick comedy, audience participation, innuendo
and outrageous costumes, often all at the same time.
Include as much booing and “it’s behind you” as possible and together
with some brilliant topical jokes and camp villainy you have all the
ingredients, including the kitchen sink to have a fun family evening.
The story sees Princess Jasmine being shipped off to a far away country
to marry a Prince, yet she has fallen in love with Sinbad, the sailor of
the ship. With all the cast on board Nemesis, the evil sea queen sinks
the ship so it lands on a deserted island filled with treasure. Add into
the story a genie who grants Sinbad three wishes and the story ends with
a happily ever after finale.
Bill Collins and Colin Hurst who have starred as the pantomime dames for
years steal the show with their comedy double act. Often messing up
their lines and wearing a variety of weird and wonderful costumes that
includes a lot of glitter and wigs. It is there local accents and
references to areas of Wigan that further add to the humour of the show.
Other characters also compliment the dames such as Tinbad and the two
idiot servants allowing very funny scenes with comic timing.
Sinbad the Sailor has a variety of young dancers from a local dance
school who use there singing talents as well to give the show a strong
chorus. With all the music played live from the pianist at the front of
the stage Joan Bond.
It is a show not to be missed and runs until the 27th January.
