| Scars - Soil |
|
Unfortunately for Soil, it was a case of right place, wrong time, and the band never really accomplished the sort of success many felt they deserved, but what they did do, was leave us with this fantastic album that still sounds as fresh three years on as it back in the day. The album opens with the fast and furious, catchy and chaotic “Breaking Me Down”, before exploding into dance floor classic and breakthrough single “Halo” (Anyone who’s ever been to Maximes Rock Night ever in the last three years will no doubt be sick to death of this song by now!). There’s nothing particularly deep and meaningful about this album, in fact, singer Ryan McCoombs seems to have delved into every lyrical cliché imaginable ‘I wanna be the one you run to, I wanna be your only one’ he sings on the bands answer to a classic love song, “The One” but it doesn’t really matter. Music doesn’t have to be deep all the time, sometimes it can be loud and fun just for the sake of it and still be incredible. Songs like “Unreal” break the mould a bit, abandoning the traditional ‘chuga-chuga’ metal riffing and going for a more modern, Alice In Chains meets Metallica style. In the days of rap-metal and so-called ‘garage punk’, Scars failed to make an impact. Had it been released during the glory days of metal however, at a time when Pantera, Machine Head and the like where striving for world domination, then things could’ve been entirely different.
