A
top North West youth theatre group is now recruiting members for
2008/09.
The Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester runs a regular Young People’s
Theatre Workshop for anyone aged 14–19 who wants to explore the world of
theatre and work with professional mentors to create their own
performances.
The group isn’t just for young actors. It is also for those with an
interest in any aspect of creating theatre – from writing, to design,
lighting, sound and stage management.
The group runs annually from September to March, with sessions on
Tuesday evenings from 5.30 – 7.30pm and on occasional Saturdays.
All sessions take place at the Royal Exchange Theatre and the group is
FREE to participants, although members need to make a small contribution
towards ticket costs for theatre visits.
Places on the Royal Exchange Young People’s Theatre Workshop are in high
demand. Application rates are high for the 30 places which are available
each year and are allocated on the basis of a taster session (see below)
and completion of a short application form and reference. There are no
auditions or interviews.
Kate Reynolds from the Royal Exchange said: “We’re looking for
enthusiastic, committed individuals who are keen to work with a team of
other young people, and we aim to build a diverse group made up of
individuals who are interested in the many different aspects of the
theatrical process.”
Taster sessions will be held at the Royal Exchange on Saturday 13th
September 2008 at the following times:
10 – 11.30am
12 – 1.30pm
2 – 3.30pm (focus on backstage elements of the group for those who don’t
want to perform)
4 – 5.30pm
The taster sessions will include a variety of different activities and
those attending will have the chance to ask questions and pick up an
application form for the group.
A member of last year’s Young People’s Theatre Workshop said: "I enjoyed
every single session of the whole thing. There honestly was not one
session where I didn’t have fun or learn something really interesting.
"I learnt lots! Acting skills, the reality of the jobs that are done
backstage, the commitment and dedication that is needed to make a good
play, the importance of teamwork, and also, I learnt a lot about myself
– about my skills and strengths and also that I really do want a career
in theatre which I honestly never thought I would."
To find out more about the project, or to book a place on one of the
taster sessions please contact Kate Reynolds (Royal Exchange Theatre
