BBC Three (Wednesdays)
by John Fazackerly
Celebrity panel shows are ten-a-penny. Whether its Never Mind The
Buzzcocks, the erstwhile They Think It’s All Over, or that clever one
with Stephen Fry that I refuse to watch for fear of being reminded about
my inferior intellect.
Rob Brydon’s Annually Retentive is supposedly a hilarious take on such
shows, with Rob and a host of C-List celebs playing caricatures of
themselves in an apparently brilliant stab at satire and irony.
I’m sorry, but this is just rubbish.
The actual panel show is interspersed with ‘Behind The Scenes’ footage
of the planning of the show at such a speed it makes your head hurt.
And whilst the backstage stuff is made up of Brydon slagging off his
guests, the panel show itself is made of the usual ‘witty banter’ that
are the foundations of most similar shows.
Only problem is, both sections are about as funny as watching your dear
old Nan fall on her backside in Asda; First eliciting a slight giggle
before the realisation sets in that this is pretty bad and something
needs to be done, in this case turning the channel (and helping Nan up,
too).
10 out of 10 for originality, but a big fat zero for being any good.
Somebody should slap Rob Brydon with a big wet fish for coming up with
this rubbish and force him take up the slightly funnier Keith Barret
character again.
That’d be nice.
