About Rafiki Motswako
Rafiki, meaning ‘friend’ in Swahili and Motswako, meaning ‘good stuff’
in Sotho, is a youth group for black and minority ethnic (BME) young
people aged 13-19 from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds, cultures and
religions in Wigan Borough.
We
provide support for BME young people in tackling issues at school,
college, work or the community, and often take part in lots of projects
and activities around various issues.
The project provides transport and a safe and separate environment for
our members to meet, play and work together.
Rafiki Motswako Weekend Group provides a double session for young people
to come together in a supportive environment and develop skills, whilst
the Rafiki Motswako Action Group on Tuesday evenings provides a chance
to chat about and address issues that are important to our members.
In the past, we’ve taken part in lots of different activities, such as:
• We produced an animated film documenting the experiences of group
members in Wigan compared to those they had in their country of origin.
• We took part in a football project with youth groups from Platt Bridge
and Orrell.
• We had one of our members elected to represent Wigan Borough in the UK
Youth Parliament.
• We were involved in a photography project documenting life in Wigan
• We regularly take part in and visit different events such as the
Exodus Festival in Manchester as part of Refugee Week and the Wigan One
World (WOW) Festival.
