Young reporters quiz Councillors

Young people put the questions to councillors last night (October 17th) at Wigan Town Hall.

Cllrs Myra Whiteside, Robert Bleakley, Ian Franzen, Richard Derricut, Paul Tushingham and Dr Christine Cottam were quizzed by a group of young reporters at the Local Democracy Week event.

The interviews focused on the councillors’ lives and their role as elected members, rather than their political beliefs or views on particular issues.

Jennifer Bold, 16, from Hawkley Hall, who interviewed Cllr Tushingham said, “It was interesting to find out more about what a councillor does. It’s a demanding job that requires a lot of dedication.

“It was also interesting to find out what Councillor Tushingham is like away from politics. He does a lot of things in his local community, like playing the organ at his church and hill walking. He was nice and it made me realise councillors are just normal people like everybody else.”

Local Democracy Week (15-21 October) has been organised by the Local Government Association, to make councils more relevant to young people and help counter growing levels of apathy among young voters.
