Dramatic effort to encourage sexual
health A double-bill theatre performance exploring
the issues of sexual health will tour the borough throughout October and
November.
The tour is aimed at very specific groups of young people in small
settings. The plays will be accompanied by workshops that raise
important discussions and signpost young people to services and centres
that provide sound information and advice on sexual health.
“Say The Word” is aimed at young people aged 13 to 15 and looks at the
importance of negotiating safe sex.
“R U Ready?” is aimed at an older audience aged 16 to 19 and tackles
issues of alcohol use, confidence in relationships and sexually
transmitted infections.
Organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Wigan Pier Theatre
Company, the project is running in partnership with Ashton, Leigh &
Wigan Primary Care Trust, Brook Advisory Service, Wigan Council’s
Teenage Pregnancy section and Wigan & Leigh College.
Wigan Pier Theatre Company’s Artistic Director Stewart Aitken said:
“Both plays use two actors to portray a variety of characters and the
issues are tackled sensitively, employing drama and comedy to get the
messages across.”
The plays have been developed over the last four years and this is the
first time that “R U Ready?” and “Say The Word” will tour together.
