Wigan trophy haul at Street Games
For the very first time, Wigan Borough sent a team to the North West
Street Games, held at the Manchester Regional Arena last Friday (August
31st).
Over 100 local young people travelled down the East Lancs to take part.
The Wigan Borough Team won trophies and medals for cheerleading,
netball, the military challenge, handball and athletics.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Sports Development Officer David Bradley
said: “The Street Games went really well. There was a real feel good
factor about the day. It was a real eye opener for all our youngsters.
All sorts of people from different ethnicities were involved and it was
really thrilling and exciting for our young people to see all sorts of
things they’d never seen before, like belly dancing.
“We’ll be taking a team to the Street Games for the next few years and
young people should look out for us delivering a lot more street sports
across the borough in the near future.”
More than 1000 young people from 13 areas across the North West attended
the Street Games. Many of the participants had played little or no sport
at all during their lives.
Sport 4 Life, a not-for-profit management company which aims to
encourage young people to regularly participate in sport, organized the
event, which was sponsored by SHOKK Ltd, Youth Fitness Specialists.
more.
John Dwan, Sport 4 Life Managing Director, said: “The Street Games are
all about introducing sport to young people and encouraging them to make
sport a regular part of their lives.
“Each year we introduce new sports and activities that are popular with
young people and this year was no exception. As well as athletics,
rugby, futsal, handball, netball, basketball, cricket and military
challenge, there was cheerleading, graffiti art and performance dance.
“In addition to achieving sporting success, the day is also about
meeting other people and embracing a sporting team spirit with other
young people from similar backgrounds.”
Great Britain and St Helens Rugby League star, Paul Sculthorpe opened
the event.
