Local youths on track for Street Games
Young people from Hag Fold and Shackerley
are set to give an all dancing display in Manchester on Friday (August
31st).
The joint youth group will give a funky street dance performance at the
Manchester Regional Arena as part of the North West Street Games.
The young dancers have created their routine on the Strictly Street
Dance project, run by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and Dance Company
Fierce from Manchester over the past six weeks. The dance routine
explores issues on the two estates including binge drinking, gang
culture, misconceptions of young people and anti-social behaviour.
Joe Lally, 15, from Shakerley says: “Strictly Street Dance has been a
good opportunity to get off the streets. I’ve learnt lots of new skills
including break dancing, hip hop and street dance, and how to get on
with other people better. I’m well excited about dancing in Manchester
as I’ve never performed before.”
Over a hundred 12 to 16 year-olds from Wigan Borough will take part in
the Street Games, which consist of 11 sports including basketball, tag
rugby and futsal – an urban version of football originating in Brazil.
The day long extravaganza will bring together young people from some of
the region’s most socio-economically deprived areas for a spectacular
day of positive, healthy and fun activities in one of the best sporting
arenas in the Northwest.
The event aims to show how sport, leisure and physical activity can be
used as an effective tool to bring communities together. Sport4Life is
organising this year’s North West Street Games, with the Wigan Leisure
and Culture Trust Sport’s Development Unit co-ordinating the Wigan
Borough team.
Sports Development Officer David Bradley says: “The Street Games give
young people the opportunity to compete in a number of exciting sports
that are a little bit different from the norm. Sports like futsol and
tag rugby are easy to pick up and the aim is to get young people playing
these sports informally in the areas in which they live.
“The Street Games develop young people’s skills and encourage them to
take part in sport regularly. The event is all about teamwork and giving
young people a sense of pride in their community. Everyone taking part
receives professional coaching and they all get to participate in a
fantastic arena. It will be a great day for everyone involved.”
