Training day for top young sports leaders
The future of sport in Wigan Borough is in
the hands of these young people.
The 14 to 16 year-olds were identified by their schools to attend a
special Junior Sports Leadership Award (JSLA) training day at Robin Park
recently.
Thirty-eight young leaders were given advanced training in coaching
rugby league, netball and football.
Young football coach Mark Hindley, 15, from Golborne High School, said:
“To be a leader you need to be responsible, considerate, passionate and
committed. I would like a career in coaching as it’s the next best thing
to being a footballer.
“I was happy to be selected for the leadership course as it looks good
on your CV and I like telling people what to do on the field.”
The JSLA has been launched in an effort to get more young people
volunteering in sport. Over 500 young people are taking part in the
scheme at 12 high schools across the borough
The JSLA Bolt On day, organised by the Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust
Sports Development Unit, brought together the most promising of these
young leaders.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Sports Development Officer Lizzie
Hendley said: “Volunteers are the key to grass roots sport. So many
people give up their own time to run sports clubs, activities and
classes for others to enjoy.
“With the 2012 Olympics looming it’s very important that grass root
sport continues to thrive here in Wigan Borough. We hope the Bolt On day
will inspire and encourage our top young sports leaders. It has been a
really productive and enjoyable event.”
In a bid to get even more young people volunteering in sport, the Sports
Development Unit has launched the Get Active, Get Volunteering scheme
for 14 to 24 year-olds. The initiative will allow participants to gain
qualifications, experience and leadership skills by delivering
structured sporting activities within Wigan Borough.
