Tri Event set to Test Youngsters

Wigan could soon be as renowned for TRI as it is for rugby league TRIES - if the popularity of triathlon continues to grow in the borough.

This Saturday (September 16th) over fifty youngsters will line up to take part in the seventh annual Wigan Council Children & Young People’s Services (CYPS) Haigh Hall Triathlon.

The fun event will see mixed and same gender teams compete against each other at cycling, canoeing and orienteering.

Fifteen teams have already entered the triathlon. Youngsters aged 11 to 21 will battle it out for prizes in five different age and gender categories.

CYPS Outdoor Education Manager Eric Bradbury says: “We’ve been running this event since 1999 and every time it just seems to get bigger and better. The emphasis is very much on having fun, promoting teamwork and building confidence in young people.”

Standish High pupil Sam Russell, 15, a member of the hugely successful Wigan Tri Team, was crowned National Youth Aquathlon Champion in July.

Triathlon has grown in popularity locally since Wigan Tri Team was established in 2004. In its short life to date, the club has had four athletes selected to join the British Triathlon World Class Performance Programme.

Wigan Tri Team coach Dave Green says: “The Haigh Hall Triathlon is slightly different because it includes canoeing and orienteering, whereas a conventional triathlon consists of cycling, running and swimming. However, any multi-discipline competition is great for the body as it gets you using all sorts of different muscles.

“It is great to see large numbers of young people entering the Haigh event yet again this year. Hopefully, it will encourage even more local youngsters to take up triathlon on a regular basis.”

The 2006 Haigh Hall Triathlon will be held this Saturday (September 16th) between 9am and 3pm. Entry is £5 per team. For further information please contact Eric Bradbury or Joan Steele on (01942) 769811.
