Disability sports day at Westleigh High
Local young people are helping to
put on a sports day for children with disabilities from a Bolton school.
Pupils from Westleigh High School, Golborne High School and Mount St.
Josephs High School (Bolton) are teaming up with members of Westleigh
Basketball Club to put on an exciting day of sport for pupils from Mount
St Josephs.
The young volunteers will be running five different sports during the
day: new age curling, botcha, basketball, zonal hockey and football.
The event is the brainchild of 14 year-old cerebral palsy sufferer Ryan
Sherridan from Mount St. Josephs.
Ryan said: “I am really looking forward to it. I have never been
involved in anything like this before. I hope everyone will enjoy it and
hopefully some of the people taking part will think about taking up one
of the sports. It should be a happy, exciting and fun day for everyone.”
Westleigh High School Basketball Coach Sharon Seaton says: “The profile
of disability sports has risen a lot in recent years. Hopefully this
event will lead to even more people with disabilities playing sport on a
regular basis. The day has been organised almost wholly by pupils and
staff from Mount St Josephs. Westleigh High offered to host the event as
the Bolton school simply doesn’t have the facilities to run it.
“It’s great to see so many young people from Wigan Borough getting
involved and offering to help out on the day. It will improve their
skills and it will help them develop a greater understanding of the
world they live in.”
The non-profit event will be held at Westleigh High School on July 7th
between 10am and 3.30pm. Food will be available throughout the day.
