Youth summit held

Around 100 young activists met with a local councillor and senior council officials today (July 2nd) to discuss the burning youth issues of the day.

School council members from Lowton High School, Golborne High School, Byrchall High School and Hindley Community High School joined forces with the local MYPs (Members of the Youth Parliament) and Children and Young People’s Services (CYPS) youth council members to highlight what the key issues are for young people in their areas.

The event, held at Lowton Youth and Community Centre on Newton Road, was attended by Leigh East Councillor Dr Christine Cottam, Hindley / Abram Township Manager Malcolm Coe, senior figures from Children and Young People’s Services, youth workers and teachers.

Golborne High School pupil Laura Garner, 13, said: “Young people are sometimes listened to, like today, but adults can overpower you and some think we don’t have important issues that need to be sorted out. Youth councils and events like today are a good way for us to get our views across.”

Youth workers and young people will now put together a report about the issues facing young people in Lowton, Golborne, Ashton and Hindley and everyone who attended the conference today will come together again in December to discuss it.
more.

Tony Russell, Lowton Youth Club Youth Worker, says: “What has been interesting about the conference today is that the key issues for all of the young people who came here are much the same, regardless of where they come from. Young people are tired of being labelled “yobs”, they’d like more places to go and they want older people not to make judgements about them just because they are young.

“We are trying to create interest in community politics amongst young people and we want to get them involved in the local township and community forums. It’s crucial that young people’s views are considered when decisions are being taken.”
