Mayor takes charity to new heights

The Mayor of Wigan is asking people to take a daredevil challenge to raise money for charity.

The local leader is hoping hundreds of local residents will take the Abseil Challenge down the side of the Quality Hotel in Wigan on Saturday May 10th.

The Mayor himself won’t be able to take part for health reasons but his secretary Christine Charnock-Jones is taking the challenge to raise funds towards the Mayor’s Charity Appeal (local breast cancer services charity no. 1114354).

The Mayor of Wigan Councillor John O’Brien said: “'This is the third year running that we will be abseiling down the Quality Hotel. We hope to raise a considerable amount of money for the Mayor Charity Appeal.

“I am told by my predecessors that the atmosphere on the day is electric and very exciting. Those abseiling are nervous as first but want another go as soon as they reach the bottom.

“The total raised for breast cancer services within the borough to date is approximately £52,000. That is fantastic but we want to raise even more. So join in and have some fun.”

The Abseil Challenge will cost £4 for adults and £2 for children and participants can raise money for any charity. Anyone can get involved, as full training will be given on the day, but written consent is required from parents if you are under 18.

Wigan Council Outdoor Education Team are organising the Abseil Challenge with assistance from youth volunteer group The Young Actioneers.

Children and Young People’s Services Outdoor Team Manager Eric Bradbury said: “The idea behind the Abseil Challenge is to help the community of Wigan to raise money for charity whilst doing something exciting. We have had hundreds of people at past Abseil Challenges and are hoping this year will be the same.

“A big thank you must be given once again to the Quality Hotel for allowing us the time and space to accommodate such a big event.”

The Abseil Challenge will be held at the Quality Hotel in Wigan on Saturday May 10th between 9.30am and 3pm. For further information about the event or the Mayor’s Charity Appeal contact Christine Charnock, the Mayor’s secretary, on 01942 827156.
