Local residents converged on St. Barnabas Church Hall on Friday to celebrate the Youth Action Project, which has been running on the estate for a year.

Delivered by the Wigan Council Children and Young People’s Services Youth Service on behalf of the Marsh Green Neighbourhood Team, and funded by the Community Safety Neighbourhood Renewal Fund (NRF), the scheme has allowed hundreds of youngsters to take part in a variety of activities including dance, theatre, football, netball, fishing, canoeing, sailing, life skills and healthy lifestyles.

The Youth Action Project has also led to the establishment of a young women’s group in Marsh Green and several youngsters have gained Compulsory Bike Training (CBT) certificates by taking part in it.

Youth Action Team Co-ordinator Carmel Parr said: “Several parents have thanked us for putting this on and the general feeling is that it has made a real difference on the estate.

“The project has been designed to give young people in Marsh Green an opportunity to try out activities they can get involved in. We have organised most of the activities locally for short periods and given out information telling young people where they can access them regularly.”

Carmel Parr continued: “All the parents came down, which was really nice and they commented on how proud they were of their children. In all the areas I’ve worked in as a youth worker, I’ve never met anywhere with keener young people than in Marsh Green. Everyone wants to get involved in whatever you are doing. It’s a really friendly community and I’m really enjoying working here.”

The Youth Action Project will continue on the Marsh Green estate until March 2008. For further information please contact Carmel Parr on 07939 069706.
