RAF for Byrchall pupil
A young Wiganer has won a place at a highly
regarded Services training college, after coming through an interview at
the spiritual home of the RAF.
Byrchall High School year-11 pupil Michael Shoesmith, 16, from
Ashton-in-Makerfield, has been awarded one of thirty RAF places at
Welbeck-the-Defence Sixth Form College in Loughborough.
Welbeck College is one of the UK’s top performing colleges with last
year’s students achieving an almost 100 percent pass rate.
Michael went to the Armed Forces Careers Office in Preston in November
last year to put in his application, after which he was invited to a
presentation which led to a filter interview.
Success in the interview led to a final interview at RAF Cranwell, the
Officers and Aircrew Selection Centre, where the world’s first true jet
engine flight took place in May 1941.
During his final interview Michael stayed on the base for four days in
March, taking aptitude tests, fitness tests and leadership and
leaderless hanger tests, in addition to group and individual planning
exercises.
At Welbeck, Michael will study A level subjects tilted towards becoming
an Engineering Officer. He will also have the opportunity to take part
in adventure training such as sky-diving, white-water rafting and
mountain climbing.
All going well, Michael will then be awarded a technical bursary for
university study by the Ministry Of Defence. Once he has completed his
studies he will serve as an Engineering Officer in the RAF for at least
six years.
Mr Birchall, Byrchall High School Headteacher said: “This is a fantastic
achievement for Michael. There will be extensive learning opportunities
within Michael’s chosen career of which we are certain he will take full
advantage.
“We are very proud of his success and wish him good luck for the
future.”
