Local girls celebrate International Women’s Day

Young women in Ince came together this week to celebrate their gender.

The girls enjoyed a host of activities held at Higher Ince Community Centre on Monday (March 10th) to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD).

The event is held across the globe each year to inspire women and to celebrate their achievements.

The Ince event included aromatherapy, beauty tips, massage, jewellery making, arts & crafts, dance, aerobics and provided information around a number of issues that widely affect women including alcohol abuse, chlamydia testing, pregnancy testing and careers.

IWD has been observed since the early 1900s. It came into being at a time when inequality and oppression was spurring women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change.

Today women are still paid less on average than men, women are still not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women’s education and health is worse than that of men’s.

However, great improvements have been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices.

And so the tone and nature of IWD has, for the past few years, moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives.
