Great Debate and a fantastic prize

Young people can win tickets to one of the biggest festivals of the year, simply by giving their views in Wigan’s Great Debate.

The Leeds Carling Festival (August 24th – 26th) will feature a host of top bands including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Razorlight and The Smashing Pumpkins.

Tickets are still available to buy but young music fans who haven’t got one yet can win their way there simply by answering yes/no questions in a text consultation.

The Great Debate, launched on Thursday (May 10th), is aiming to get the views of 50,000 young people on issues like health, respectful relationships and teenage pregnancy.

Each week during the month long consultation young people will be able to win two Leeds tickets by texting their answers to the following questions to 07624 808237:

Wigan Teenage Pregnancy Co-ordinator Alan Sherwood said: “Music festivals are more popular than ever and we’re sure having the chance to win tickets for Leeds will get lots of young people texting in their views and contributing to The Great Debate. Answering the text questions will also get young people thinking about issues like teenage pregnancy, safer sex, respectful relationships and the services we have here in Wigan Borough to support them, and that is very important during the summer months when young people are partying at festivals and the like.”

The Great Debate is being supported by a number of local celebrities including Carley Stenson, Stuart Maconie and the Wigan Warriors.

Speaking at the launch of the Great Debate Wigan Council’s Deputy Director of Children and Young People’s Services Deborah Brownlee said: “We hope the Great Debate will give us more of an insight into how we ensure that children and young people grow in a way that enables them to develop safe, healthy and respectful relationships.

“The key to this is we want young people to make the decisions and we won’t do this by lecturing them on what to do and how to behave. Instead we want to help them to work through the issues that affect them and make the right lifestyle choices.”

Wigan Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, Cllr Brian Wilson, says: “It is vital that we make sure that everyone has the chance to have their say as part of the Great Debate and everyone’s opinion and point of view is welcome. I hope people will get more of an idea about the challenges we face as a borough and feel the need to make a contribution to help young people make healthy lifestyle choices.”
