It’s cut, style and spray at the YMCA

Young mums are learning some money saving skills through a hair care course at Ashton, Wigan and District YMCA.

The ten weeks of training is teaching the girls basic techniques including cutting, blow drying, styling, product knowledge and use of electrical equipment. The idea is that the young women will take the skills home and use them on their children, partners and themselves.

The course is being delivered by Venture Learning Wigan & Leigh.

Barry Lord-Gambles, from Venture Learning, says: “It’s all really practical stuff the young women can use at home. The aim is to boost the girls’ confidence while at the same time giving them the skills to improve their own and their family’s personal appearance.”

Ashton, Wigan and District YMCA became a Surestart Children’s Centre in November 2007 and the hairdressing course is one of several positive opportunities it is now offering young parents.

Chief Executive Jean Pye says: “The aim is to create a bridge for young parents to help them make informed choices about areas of training or work they might like to progress on to.”
