Young People Rise to Arts Challenge

A clutch of inspiring youth arts projects will be showcased at the Wigan Investment Centre tomorrow night (May 10th).

Young people from across Wigan Borough will come together to celebrate the 2006/07 Youth Arts Challenge, which has given many young residents in Wigan and Leigh a real cultural experience over the past year.

The scheme, organised locally for the past five years by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and financed by Manchester Airport’s district funding programme, has supported eleven major community-based arts projects in the past twelve months:

• Friends of Young Carers - Shining Stars: Young people who care for adults have made a DVD encouraging others in their position to join the local Young Carers group.Image: 'Friends of Young Carers' Briony (left) and Rebecca
• Wigan and Leigh Embrace – I’m not one of them, I’m one of us: Young people, both with and without disabilities, have created a DVD with a strong message to the community about issues that concern them.
• Anvil Street Drummers – Drum To The Hills: The group planned and delivered a music residential course for young people.
• The Spinney (Young Men’s Ward) – Chancers: Young men with health problems developed creative writing skills by working with a professional writer/poet/storyteller, helping the group to change their attitudes to themselves and life in general.
• PSHE&C Team Poster Project: Pupils from Kingsdown High School designed and produced a series of posters promoting safety messages on subjects such as alcohol, drugs and sex education.
• Witness This: Young people worked with Wigan Pier Theatre Company to create a performance that raised awareness of young people’s experiences of hate crimes such as bullying, racism and homophobia.
• Youth Action Team – Community Van Artwork competition: The competition asked young people to design a poster around the themes of enjoyment, achievement and staying safe. The winners worked with graffiti art company Spearfish to transfer the winning designs on to a new youth community van.
• ByoU – Carnival Works: Young people worked with carnival artists to create costumes for the PRIDE Festival in Manchester, raising awareness about the issues facing gay, lesbian and bi-sexual young people.Image: ByoU members in costumes
• Ladies Lane – We All Have A Voice: Young people with limited or no verbal communication were given a voice through the creation of art at a series of visual art workshops.
• Wigan & Leigh Youth Dance – Emotional Literacy & Dance: Young people explored the image of young people in the media through various dance performances.
• Rafiki / Motswako Story Board Project: Young people examined their particular cultures, customs and traditions and produced a large painting to reflect these issues.

Vicky Fletcher, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Arts Development Officer, said: “Once again the Youth Arts Challenge has demonstrated what a huge number of talented young people we have here in Wigan Borough. This year’s projects have been fantastically diverse, highlighting key youth issues through the arts. The Youth Arts Challenge Celebratory Event tomorrow is set to be a really entertaining evening. It is amazing to see the sense of achievement people feel when they have been involved in fulfilling projects like these.”
