Lowton Girls Dish up a FairTrade Feast

Young people in Lowton made a stand for the environment and good labour standards during FairTrade Fortnight (February 25th – March 9th).

Lowton Girls’ Group held a FairTrade bakery session and created a display about the issue to raise awareness amongst other members of Lowton Youth Club.

Wigan Council Children and Young People’s Services (CYPS) youth worker Deb Hall says: “The girls researched the issue, looking at the history behind it, the availability of FairTrade goods and the impact of cash crops on producers.

“It’s been a really enjoyable project and thanks to the girls a number of young people are now more informed about an important issue.”

Meanwhile, young people at Golborne High School held a FairTrade tasting session for pupils, teachers and support staff. The event was held at the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards after school project, which is run by the CYPS youth service.
