Scholes set for bumper activity day

A hard hitting play performed by former drug addicted prisoners is coming to Wigan.

‘Choose Life’ will be performed as part of a bumper activity and healthy living day to be held in and around Sunshine House on Scholes Precinct on Saturday (March 31st). Performed by former convicts from Walton Prison in Liverpool, where 80% of the inmates are class A drug users who funded their drugs habit through a life of crime, the drama gives a real life insight into the devastating impact drugs can have on the lives of users.

The volunteers who perform the play hope other people learn from their experiences. James Caroll, who works with the Choose Life group, said: “The play is primarily aimed at young people. It doesn’t say that taking drugs can never be enjoyable but it shows how substance misuse can quickly spiral out of control.

“The play is hugely effective at getting the message across. Young people will only listen so much to the advice of people who preach about experiences they haven’t been through. You’re far more likely to listen to someone who has lost their children, or suffered domestic violence, because of drugs dependency.”

After the ‘Choose Life’ performance, members of the public will be able to discuss drug use with the cast. During the bumper activity day, young people and members of the Scholes community will also be able to take part in a variety of fun sessions including reflexology, dance, bouncy castle, Taichi and aromatherapy. Organisations and groups will be giving out advice and information on issues like healthy eating and smoking cessation too.

Several local authority services and voluntary organisations, including Wigan Council Children & Young People’s Services (CYPS), One Voice, the Youth Offending Team (YOT), Groundwork, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, Community Protection and the Wigan North Township team, are working together to organise the interactive healthy living day.

Imi Kala, CYPS Advanced Practitioner for Youth Work in Scholes, who is leading the project, said: "The organisation of this day has been a real team effort right from the outset. As a result, there is going to be a great deal going on throughout the day and everyone will be able to enjoy a range of indoor and outdoor activities. This is all about bringing the community together and we’re encouraging everyone in Scholes to come along and join the fun.”

The Scholes activity day gets underway this Saturday at 12noon. For further information please contact Imi Kala on (01942) 768055.
