Young people thanked for community work

Wigan Borough is saying a big thank you to local young people.
Each year, the Wigan Council Community Engagement team, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and Wigan Community and Voluntary Services (CVS)Image: Big Thank You Award winners organise ‘The Big Thank You Awards’ to celebrate the contribution everyday people make to local life.
The good deeds of young people are being recognised this year at three glitzy award ceremonies. Helpful youngsters like Daniel Parr and Natasha Moss are being honoured for the work they do to improve life in their community. Byrchall High School pupil Daniel (14) volunteers most days during his holidays at The Hope Centre in St Helens, which provides food, shelter and support for the homeless, while Natasha (14) gives up two hours each week to First Aid charity St John’s Ambulance, despite suffering from rare spinal condition Scoliosis.
Natasha said: “I was amazed and really chuffed to be nominated for a Big Thank You Award. Lots of young people do good things for their local community and it was really nice for me to be recognised for what I do.”
The first award ceremony was held at Byrchall High School in Ashton-in-Makerfield last Thursday (March 15th). Big Thank You gongs were presented to 90 young people during the evening, which was attended by 240 members of the local community, including Wigan Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People Brian Wilson.
The night opened with a short film produced by local filmmaker Peter Goodwin with assistance from Garswood teenagers Rachael Mitchinson (15) and Jenny Lunn (15). Music by 15 young local bands was also played to guests as they arrived and left the ceremony.
A further 160 young people will be given awards at two further ceremonies to be held at Standish High School (March 22nd) and Westleigh High School (March 29th).
Makerfield MP Ian McCartney said: “Wigan Borough is full of ordinary people who do extraordinary things and these awards are an opportunity to showcase the extraordinary achievements of young people who live in the area.
“I want to congratulate all those who have organised the awards and the young people of Wigan Borough for the positive contribution they make to their local communities.”
