2008 Wigan Borough youth parliament members elected

Sean Bates, 15, from Standish and Dane Smith, 16, from Worsley Mesnes, have been elected to the UK Youth Parliament.

The new Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs) for Wigan Borough will be assisted during their year in office by Ahmed Younis, 12, from Marsh Green and Nicola Rigby, 17, from Worsley Mesnes who were elected as MYP deputies.

The results of the 2008 Wigan Borough youth parliament elections were announced at a special event at Wigan Town Hall, with Sean and Dane beating off competition from five other candidates to win the election.

During the election campaign, Dane, who works as a land surveyor, promised to fight for the establishment of warm, comfortable youth centres with music and arcades. Sean pledged to work hard to get bus fares reduced for young people and vowed to get his points across to a wide range of people.

The newly elected MYPs have a busy year ahead of them as they are now responsible for taking the views of young people in Wigan Borough to people who have the power to change things, including MPs, councillors and council officials.

Sean and Dane will also attend the annual sitting of the UK Youth Parliament, which will this year be held in The House of Lords in London in May.

The new MYPs for Wigan Borough replace Natasha Abbott and Mohammed Younis, who both served two years in office.
