Nutrition and life skills on the menu at supper club

Young people are getting a taste for cooking through a new project in Ince.

Each Monday, The Supper Club is giving two young people the opportunity to prepare and serve up a tasty meal for two guests at Manley Street Community Centre.

The project is being run the Wigan Council Children and Young People’s Services youth service in a bid to improve young people’s cooking skills, food knowledge and table etiquette.

The young people are shown how to cook meals from scratch including spaghetti bolognaise, soup and home-made bread, while learning about hygiene, nutrition and healthy eating.

The young chefs invite a friend to dine with them and are taught how to set a table properly.

Patsy Hayden, Advanced Practitioner for Youth Work in Wigan town centre and Ince, says: “We have done cooking projects in the past around certain themes but we thought we would go a little bit further this time by learning the young people how to cook something substantial and showing them how to dine properly, like you would in a restaurant with friends.

“Everyone has really enjoyed the project. We’ve had a good mix of lads and girls taking part, which is great as we want to challenge traditional views about who should do the cooking and cleaning up at home.

“The meals are cheap and relatively simple to prepare, so we are giving young people practical catering skills that they will hopefully develop further in their own time.”
