Half-Term Activity BonanzaGirls playing football

During the February half-term break young people in Wigan Borough can keep themselves busy thanks to a joint Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust and Wigan Council’s Children and Young People’s Services bumper activity programme. Both organisations have come together to organise an action packed half-term week. So whether your child is a sporting fanatic or a budding artist there is plenty on offer to prevent the boredom setting in.

Hesketh Fletcher High School
• Billed as the ‘Half-term Extravaganza’ this gigantic activity programme will be running throughout the whole half-term week. The free activities, which are open to everyone aged 11 to 16, start daily at 9:45am and finish at 3pm. Over 15 different activities will be on offer including football, street dance, ice skating, bike rides, crafts, music, table tennis and trampolining. A free lunch is also provided each day. The week culminates with a trip to see Wigan Athletic take on Newcastle United in the Carling Premiership at the JJB Stadium. Tyldesley Swimming Pool
• One and two hour swimming ‘Distance Award’ sessions will be held here every day throughout the half-term (apart from on Wednesday the 14th). Qualified instructors will encourage young people to see how far they can swim. All ages are welcome. This activity costs just £1 and each participant will receive a certificate.
• Tuesday the 13th and Thursday the 15th is ‘Wet & Wild’ time with an inflatable slide, diving boards, fun floats and many more fun features. The sessions costs £2.

Rosebridge High School and Abraham Guest Specialist Sports College
• These multi-sports camps for are free to all girls and boys aged 8 to 14 years-old. The sessions, to be held on the 12th and 13th at Rosebridge and the 14th and 15th at Abraham Guest, will include football, rugby, basketball, hockey and other sports.

The Robin Park Indoor Sports and Tennis Centre
• Tennis fans will be spending their half-term at the Robin Park Indoor Sports and Tennis Centre. A mini red / mini orange (specially adapted forms of the game for children aged 5+) competition is taking place on Tuesday the 13th. The event (2pm – 4pm) costs £3.70 to enter. A free tennis session for children aged 4 to 8 will also be held on Sunday the 11th between 2pm and 4pm.
• Tennis camps for young people aged 8+ will be held on the 14th and 15th. The sessions start at 10am and run through to 2pm. Each day costs £7.40.
• Tennis Ratings Bands Competitions will be held on the 16th between 9.30am and 1.30pm. The session costs £9.50 and only players with a rating can take part. A dance session

Ashton Swimming Pool
• Hour long ‘Rookie Lifeguard Taster Sessions’ will be held on Monday the 12th and Friday the 16th. The training will improve your survival skills, enable you to swim more competently and provide you with basic lifeguard knowledge. Each session costs £3.40 and is designed for children aged 7 to 11.
• Young people that have achieved bluefin / school main pool standard can learn diving and water skills on February 14th. ‘Distance Award’ sessions will take place on the 15th and 16th. Diving and water skills costs £3.40, while distance swimming is £1.80 (plus £2.50 if you want a badge and certificate).

Hesketh Fletcher High School & Meadowbank Primary School
• Street and contemporary dance for the 11 to 16 year olds will be held at Hesketh Fletcher as part of the ‘Half-term extravaganza’. A dance session will be held every day from 10am to 12noon
• Younger children (8 – 11 years old) can have a go at street dance by attending three sessions at Meadowbank Primary on the 13th, 14th and 15th.

Turnpike Gallery
• The Turnpike Gallery will be hosting two arts activity workshops during the half-term. The first, for 3 to 8 year-olds will be held on Tuesday the 13th between 10:30am and 12:00pm. Children must be accompanied by an adult. A two hour session for children aged 9+ will be held on the 14th. Tickets cost £2 and must be booked in advance.

Leigh Library
• A free drop in session for will be held on Thursday the 15th offering a wide range of activities including rapping, DJing, street dance, break dance, graffiti art and quizzes. Young people will be able to end the half-term week in style on Saturday the 17th with a free fun session that will include karaoke, PS2 competitions and BMX coaching.
