Making a stand against Hate Crime
Young people are putting their half-term
holiday to good use by promoting Hate Crime Awareness Week at a stand in
the Grand Arcade.
The young people and staff from the Wigan Council Children and Young
People’s Services (CYPS) youth service are giving information to members
of the public about the event and letting them know how they can get
involved.
Patsy Hayden, Advanced Practitioner for youth work in Wigan town centre
and Ince, says: “We’ve spoken to hundreds of people over the course of
the week.
“It’s been a great opportunity for us and the young people to talk with
older residents and people we don’t come into contact with regularly
about hate crime and other issues in our community.
“It’s also given us a chance to highlight how we work with other
agencies to educate young people about crime in a positive way.
“It has been very worthwhile and I’d like to thank the Wigan Council
Community Safety team for providing us with promotional materials and
freebies to hand out and the Grand Arcade for accommodating us.”
