The bad thing about heavy metal is that too
many bands tend to wallow in their own woe, feasting on a decadence of
doom and gloom and bringing misery to the masses.
The good thing about heavy metal however, is that, on occasion, a band
will come along who know all too well that that music is supposed to be,
fun, and doesn’t have to suck to be so.
Municipal Waste are such band. Yes they’re loud, yes they’re faster than
a speeding bullet loaded with Red Bull, yes they’ll probably scare the
hairs off your cat and the bloomers off your granny, but above all else,
they’re a whole lot of fun.
And what more would you expect from a band who name their new album ‘The
Art of Partying’ and have such gloriously brilliant tracks such as ‘Head
Banger Face Rip’ and ‘Born to Party’?
Kicking off with the furiously chaotic intro ‘Pre-Game’, the album
launches proper with the title track ‘The Art of Partying’ , which, much
as Municipal Waste do throughout these 15 tracks of bedlam, sounds like
thrash lords Slayer getting into a pub brawl with hardcore punk act
Suicidal Tendencies, a scraping riff laying waste to gunfire drumming
and a stalking bassline.
Arguably the highlight of the album, ‘Headbanger Face Rip’ takes the
word ‘awesome’ to new levels, inspiring frenzied headbanging with it’s
lightning guitars, thunderous rhythms and raging vocals.
The storm continues with the deep groove and contorted lashings of
‘Mental Shock’, the hurricane of hollering and breakneck bass of ‘A.D.D
(Attention Deficit Destroyer)’ and the sheer power and brilliance of
‘The Inebriator’ which turns up the groove before breaking loose with
the band’s trademark speed and ferociously fun thrash and repeating the
whole thing all over again.
Without once pausing for breath, this fervently ballistic album slashes,
stabs, crashes and crushes throughout fifteen songs of carnage, chaos
and calamity, and it’s all entirely awesome.
Heavy music need no longer be the reserve of the morbidly depressed and
manically aggressive. Municipal Waste are here to save heavy metal from
it’s own miserable demise, and a damn fine job they do of it too.
