Unsigned Exposed: Me Versus

Image: Me VersusThe literature that accompanies the latest demo from Lowton-based three-piece Me Versus states that the band are all about “Live energy, passion [and] communicating with a room full of strangers.”

Unfortunately, the last time we caught the band live was in March 2005 whilst they were still doing their thing as ‘8 Days Late’, and admittedly our memories of that night are now a little hazy, so we’ll mainly have to take their word for it.

Yet, listening to these three tracks of dark, soaring, near-anthemic rock, you get a pretty good idea of what a Me Versus gig could, nay, should, be like.

As vocals fuelled by angst and emotion rip and roll their way over brooding bass and powerful, energetic guitars, all backed by speeding sonic bursts of drums, images are quickly conjured forth of exuberant Me Versus fans all bouncing in unison inside a packed venue.

We see them all, drenched in sweat and bathed in sound as the band are on stage, swept along by their own storming creations and engrossed totally in music that they’re all clearly so passionate about.

Passion is the key word here. It imposes itself into each song, weaves and bobs through every slice of sharp guitar and grinds against the emotional roar of vocals.

It’s everywhere you turn on this demo, and it makes listening to it an all the more enjoyable experience; after all, here are a band who really believe what they’re saying, and put tonnes of raw energy into making you believe it too.

It’s difficult to really pin point what kind of influences Me Versus are bringing to the table here, and though that’s never a bad thing, we can’t help but try to find some, if only to help understand where it is they’re coming from.

The opening second of first track ‘Process’ reminds us somewhat of latter-day Foo Fighters, before breaking into something else entirely.

Meanwhile, Johnny Djabarouti’s lyrics and the way he delivers them with such earnestness over stabbing, slicing guitars, especially on ‘Moderation’ reminds us of ‘100 Broken Windows’-era Idlewild.

Yet truthfully, Me Versus don’t really sound like either of these bands, or any others that we cant think of.

That’s not to say they’ve come up with the most original music ever to be recorded, after all, there’s still something familiar about all this, but rather that there’s absolutely no benefit in trying to compare Me Versus to other bands.

No, the only benefits come from taking these three songs for what they are; emotionally-wrought, energy-driven and enjoyable.

We may not be in a position to agree with me Versus about their live energy or ability to connect with a room full of strangers, but we can agree with them about one thing:

They’re definitely passionate, and energetic, and honest and earnest and raw and very, very good.
