Following the success of her hit single
‘Never Leave You’ back in 2003, American R&B star Lumidee Cedeño returns
to the fore with ‘Unexpected’, a fresh, full-flavoured rhythm and rhyme
fest that sees the sultry songstress silence those who had her consigned
to One-Hit Wonderdom.
Lumidee’s latest offering is laden with the kind of soulful R&B hooks
and smooth vocals that have seen the likes of Rihanna and Beyonce
dominate the charts over the last few years.
Yet there’s much more to Lumidee’s style and delivery than a slack
attempt at commercial hip-pop.
Whether she’s sliding her silky tones over the gentle guitars of ‘Stuck
On You’ or hitting the mic’ with some in your face rapping on the
synth-strong ‘Could Be Anything’, what Lumidee seems eager to prove with
‘Unexpected’, is that she’s the genuine article; an artist with an edge
and a desire to hit the upper echelon of the hip-hop world.
And nowhere is this more evident than in the number of heavyweight stars
she’s recruited to help her out.
Snoop Dog pops up to drop lyrics into the bouncing ‘In It For The
Money’, Shaggy kicks back in the reggae tinged ‘Feel Like Makin’ Love’
and Wyclef Jean joins the party in our personal favourite, ‘The Whistle
Song’, and they’re just some of the names getting involved.
And though there’s plenty of star-power on ‘Unexpected’, there’s no
reason to believe that Lumidee can’t carry such a decent album on her
own back, and no matter who she’s teaming up with, she holds her own
with confidence, attitude, and above all, talent.
It’s been four long years since Lumidee rocked the charts with ‘Never
Leave You’, but rest assured, she’s back with a vengeance, and this
time, hopefully, she’s here to stay.
