What a breath of fresh air! When the buzz started to circulate that the
daughter of comedian/actor Keith Allen was to embark on a singing
career, the whole country elapsed into a collective cry of ‘Oh god, does
she really have to?’.
For what most people were expecting was a spoilt little rich girl using
daddy’s connections to fulfil some fluffy pop idol fantasy.
They were, quite thankfully, wrong.
Like it or lump it, Lilly Allen is the real deal, folks, and ‘Alright,
Still’, the outspoken songstress’ debut album is here to prove it.
With lyrical content dabbling in the darker aspects of life in Britain
that have seen her compared, in personality at least, to The Streets’
Mike Skinner, and a melting pot containing a range of styles from rock,
ska, hip-hop, there’s something in here that gives Miss Allen a raw
edge, whilst a sugar coating summery, poppy vibes provide an
accessibility that looks likely to bring home mainstream success.
Mixing pert, modest vocals with passion, wit and a great melody, Lilly
waxes lyrical on stand out tracks such as ‘LDN’, ‘Alfie’ and lead-off
single ‘Smile, making up an album that is, when all is said and done, a
rather enjoyable summer release.
