Through twelve tracks of lush, calming ditties about love, life and
whatever else Katie Melua and long-time collaborator Mike Batt had on
their minds at the time, the diminutive songstress paints subtle
pictures rich in colour and emotion in latest album,
Pictures.
And whilst her canvas comes to life with splashings of gentle guitars,
jazz-tinged pop pleasantries and the odd bit of pseudo-reggae, what
really makes these pictures stand out from the crowd is that voice.
Say what you will about Katie Melua, there’s no doubting that she has an
unbelievably sweet voice, and though it sometimes seems to struggle with
overly simple lyrics, when allowed to really bring emotion to the fore,
that voice is a thing of beauty.
But is the album any good? Well, actually, yes it is.
OK, ‘Pictures’ isn’t likely to convert any naysayers to the Melua cause,
but for those, like your somewhat ignorant reviewer, who never really
paid much attention to either of Katie’s previous releases, it serves as
a warm, welcoming introduction to the cosy, charming tunes that have
made Katie Melua a household name.
Personal highlights come in the form of the breezy, up-tempo ‘If The
Lights Go Out’ and the fun, quirky opening track ‘Mary Pickford (Used To
Eat Roses)’, but really, each track is enjoyable in its own right.
Over all, if you’re looking for an LP you can chill out to and have
floating in the background whilst lost in your own little world, you can
do far worse than ‘Pictures’.
