‘Unknown Soldier’, the latest solo effort
from former ‘Hoax man Jon Amor, is full of the kind of rich and deeply
powerful songs that the would-be musician in all of us so desperately
wishes we could write.
Full of rhythm, groove and vigour, with ‘Unknown Soldier’, Amor and
colleagues invite you to join them a rock ‘n’ roll ride through the
musical landscape.
And what a ride it is, Travelling through the ages to take in blues,
funk, pop, folk and sun-drenched rock, collecting all the classic
elements of great song-writing en route and placing them firmly in a
modern setting.
At least, that’s how it seems as Mr. Amor, his voice sometimes gentle,
sometimes strong yet always full of life, waxes lyrical over bulbous
bass, dusky guitars and even a quick cameo from a harmonica-toting
Robert Plant, as his bouncy ballads and storming footstompers sink their
teeth into your soul.
Whether it’s the slow-cooked, smoky slab of acoustic sparkle that is the
wonderfully enchanting ‘In The Devil’s Back Yard’, the bass-heavy ‘Headspin’,
with all it’s scuzzy guitars and a killer solo, or the booming,
Beck-like beast called ‘Drowning’, every track on this album brings its
own highlight to the fore, showing off a wealth of song-writing talent
that flirts with several genres all at once without really belonging to
either.
Call it blues-rock if it helps, call it funky folk if you can’t think of
anything better, but whatever name you use to describe this wicked
collection of rhythm and blues beauties, there’s only one word that
could really do it justice: Absolutely brilliant.
Ok then, two words.
