BBC Three (Various times)
By John Fazackerly
So, the wonderfully crude and immature ‘Two Pints Of Lager & A Packet Of
Crisps’ has come to an end, and now Sheridan Smith, best known for her
vulgar-yet-loveable character Janet, has grown up, moved to Manchester’s
Northern Quarter and changed her name to Michelle.
Yet beneath all this, it is very hard to see Smith as anyone other than
Janet in a smart suit. By the by, they’re the same character, and given
that it comes from the same people who brought us ‘Two Pints…’, much of
the humour is on the same level too.
So, what’s it about then? Sheridan, as we’ve already established, is
Michelle, a head strong lass rapidly approaching 30, who is trying
desperately to figure out what she wants to do with her life. Whilst
she’s at it, her thick-as-a-brick, would-be DJ has moved in, his mate
Grant is totally in love with her, and her new boyfriend, Dean wants an
‘open relationship’. Oh, and there’s her best mate, Claire too, but to
be honest, she’s neither use nor ornament to anybody.
OK, so it’s not ‘Two Pints…’, but Grown Ups is a brilliantly funny show
that is marred by only one small problem. That is that, throughout the
entire thing, you can’t help but long for Johnny to come running in and
make Michelle change her name back, and for the two of them to live
happily ever after.
That’d be nice.
