There’s just no escaping that song, is
there?
Currently riding high atop the UK singles chart for (at time of writing)
the seventh week running, ‘Crazy’, in all its 70s-tinged disco-soul
splendour, is an infectious, groovy hip-hop tune that sticks in your
head from the moment you hear it, or even just think about it.
(Go on, admit it, it’s playing over in your head right now!)
Yet Gnarls Barkley, a collaboration between former Goodie Mob man Cee
Lo, and Danger Mouse, the eccentric genius behind the Jay-Z/Beatles mash
up, ‘The Grey Album’ and Gorillaz 2005 smash ‘Demon Days’, are more than
just a one-trick pony.
Opening up with ‘Go Go Gadget Gospel’ and spanning 14 tracks of pure
musical decadence, ‘St. Elsewhere’ is a soulful indulgence that fuses a
host of genres into one seriously cool album. Hip-hop, rap, R’n’B, jazz,
funk and soul are all present and correct, working their collective
magic under the production hand of Danger Mouse and the high, melodic
and erratic vocal of Cee Lo. It’s a vocal that runs wild with humour,
passion and soul, and is, quite simply, a joy to listen to.
If you haven’t already been out and bought this album for yourself, do
so now. ‘St. Elsewhere’ is guaranteed to be 2006’s essential purchase.
