Transworld Ultra Rock is an utterly
enthralling collection of backside-kicking rock ‘n’ roll from Tokyo trio
Electric Eel Shock.
From start to finish, this distortion drenched, grove guzzling beast
sets out with the sole purpose of having a blisteringly good time
fuelled by nothing other than a ravishing set of riffs.
We’re talking big riffs, small riffs, sharp riffs and soft riffs, dirty
riffs and not so dirty riffs, any kind of riff you can imagine, each one
conjuring up images of a number of bands, without ever sounding entirely
like any of them.
Imagine Wolfmother having a stab at pop, Fu Manchu going indie or Led
Zeppelin reforming as a punk rock act, and you’re somewhere on the verge
of being close to the divergent seams of influence on display on this
album, all sewn together by an urgent need to great furiously great
tunes.
And whilst every slab of blistering rock ‘n’ roll is as different as the
next, from the supremely catchy ‘Big Mistake’ to the fast-paced chopping
and chanting of ‘Limousine’, there’s something that unites them too,
namely dirty guitars and devilishly good times.
There’s a little something for everyone here, connected by the
unmistakable sound of sharp guitars, weighty bass and a cool as hell
vocal working in harmony to create one stormer of an album.
It may be true that Electric Eel Shock aren’t likely to set the world
alight with their latest release, but as long as they keep making music
as enjoyable and frivolous as ‘Transworld Ultra Rock’ they really don’t
have to.
