Quirky, cute, ever irreverent, ‘Remember
That I Love You’, the latest effort from antifolk icon Kimya Dawson is a
woefully beautiful peak inside the mind of a little girl in awe of the
world.
Rarely working with anything other than her acoustic guitar and a
xylophone, the 12 tracks that make up this follow up to the
well-received ‘Hidden Vagenda’ are almost wonderfully childlike. Playful
little ditties such as ‘I Like Giants’ and the simple, sweet charms of
‘Better Weather’ are the epitome of this uncomplicated, unthreatening LP
from the former Moldy Peaches gal.
Yet as sweet and silly as these songs are, darker tales of sorrow and
pain lay beneath a blanket of humorous, daft lyrics. With a soft,
disjointed whisper, Dawson talks of hurt, of lost loves and mortality.
From telling us about her dying mother, and asking ‘the skeletons in her
closet, please leave her alone’ on ‘My Mom’, to writing out ‘don't ever
put this body in a casket/Burn it and put the ashes in a basket’ on her
bum, it becomes clear that behind the girl singing the songs, there is a
woman who has seen the world, and knows a thing or two.
Either way, with every gentle word, soothing strum of her guitar, Kimya
Dawson simply makes you want to run out and give her the biggest cuddle
ever.
