Forget Lord of The Rings, forget Star Wars
(either the old ones or the new ones!), Back To The Future is one of the
definitive trilogies of modern cinema.
Michael J. Fox stars as the epitome of 80s cool, Marty McFly, who has an
unlikely relationship with madcap scientist, Dr. Emmet Brown
(Christopher Lloyd in his most memorable role), and travels back and
forth through time in the Doc’s modified Delorean.
Whilst the original Back To The Future is widely regarded as an 80s
classic, the two sequels are less favoured by critics, yet are both
still entertaining romps through time that blend Sci-Fi, comedy and that
feel good factor that is the staple of any good family movie.
In the first, groundbreaking flick, Doc finally completes his time
machine-cum-motor car, only to find himself pursued by terrorists who
want to use the vehicle’s fuel to make a bomb. Jumping in the car to
escape, Marty accidentally blasts himself back to the year 1955, where
he almost prevents his parents from ever meeting, thus negating his own
existence!
With the time machine out of fuel, Marty must race against time to
ensure his parents end up together before finding a way to restart the
Delorean and get back to the future.
It’s a clever, fun film with an almost flawless script that will
hopefully be remembered as a classic for years to come.
Yet if you thought the plot of the first one sounds confusing, just wait
till you get to Back To The Future II!
This one picks up where the last adventure left off, and sees Marty and
Doc travelling forward to the year 2015 to solve a few problems within
the McFly family.
Once the job’s a good ‘un, they return to the present day only to find
that their home town has been wrecked thanks to some one, namely
arch-rival Biff, tampering with the time line.
Now, the quirky duo must once again head back to 1955 and save the day,
making sure not to bump into past versions of themselves.
Sound a tad confusing? Well don’t worry, all is elaborated in this
witty, exciting and fast paced sequel that almost, though not quite, is
better than the original.
Sadly, the same can not be said for the third and final outing for our
time travelling heroes, though let’s face it, that’s no easy task!
In Back To The Future III, Doc has managed to get himself trapped, and
eventually murdered in a wild-west era 1885.
Marty, himself still stuck in 1955, must travel back to 1885, rescue the
Doc and get the Delorean back up and running after a rip in the fuel
tank.
This is another well-written film with brilliant performances from all
involved.
A comedy/Sci-Fi/Western of sorts, Back To The Future III is a nice,
fitting end to a brilliant series, packed with humour, wit, sentiment
and first rate performances.
Ideal for the whole family, if you’ve yet to see any of the BTTF films,
what are you waiting for!?!
