Brushfire Fairytales - Jack Johnson

The cover of Jack Johnson’s fifth album “Brushfire Fairytales” shows the surf-legend smack in the middle of a massive shower of rain, and it’s at once both the most unsuitable and totally fitting image for this fantastic album.

Unsuitable because every chilled-out riff and lazy bass line is the sound of a cool, sultry summer evening’s beach party, whispering sweet  nothings into your significant other’s ear after a hard day tearin’ up the local spots, rather than standing in the wet rain waiting for the 600 bus to your Grans. Yet totally fitting, because, as songs like the deep, acoustic blues of “Losing Hope” and the jaunty “Bubble Toes” prove, listening to “Brushfire…” is as refreshing as dancing butt-naked under a ravishing waterfall whilst drinking Oasis.

Highlights on this cool, smooth, sexy and chilled album come in the form of  “Middle Man” Johnson’s groovy guitar-picking and slick voice riding bass lines that bob along like calm ocean waves, and “Drink The Water” that comes across as “Californication” era Red Hot Chilli Peppers getting intimate with a slightly sedate Lenny Kravitz.

True, “Brushfire Fairytales” isn’t likely to get your party rocking, but for after a long day of skating and rock ‘n’roll, it is essential chill out music.
