02/02/09 | Homes for the Future
The future is in your hands.
That’s the message from Wigan Council’s Housing Chiefs who want to hear
your views about what you’d want when it comes to living in Wigan
Borough.
Making a decision about where to live, and possibly even getting your
own home, will inevitably be something we’ll all have to deal with at
some point, but staying here in the borough might not be that easy.
A lot has changed in Wigan in the last few years. House prices have
increased substantially, far outstripping wages, which makes it
difficult for first time buyers to purchase their first home or, in some
cases, even find somewhere to rent.
Young people living in many areas of the borough are likely to have less
choice of accommodation now and may face the prospect of living at home
longer or moving to other, more affordable areas when they want to set
up home.
Meanwhile, demand for Council accommodation is at an all time high, and
despite there being more privately rented homes available, not everyone
can afford them, especially when it comes to saving up a deposit to
either rent or buy.
With so much gloom, housing bosses now want to know what you think
should happen to the housing situation in the years to come.
Do you think more affordable homes for first time buyers should be a
priority? How about greener homes or safer neighbourhoods, or perhaps
more support for disabled people?
If you’ve got strong views, the council’s Housing Strategy team have put
together a questionnaire to help you get your voice heard.
