Question: What do hip-hop superstar Eminem and English literature icon
Geoffrey Chaucer have in common?
Answer: They are both joined together in the creative mind of Canadian
rapper, Baba Brinkman.
On a Monday night at St. John Rigby College, Orrell, English students
ditched their textbooks to be joined by both literature and hip-hop fans
as rap artist and medieval scholar, Baba Brinkman performed his hit
one-man show, ‘The Rap Canterbury Tales’.
The LINC met Baba at Wigan North Western, taking him on a brief tour
around the town before bringing him back to the office for an ‘In The
Hotseat’ session, before he was whisked off to conduct a hip-hop writing
workshop for budding rappers.
Later, Baba entertained an enthusiastic Wigan audience with his highly
unique show that had them laughing and roaring with applause throughout.
The Rap Canterbury Tales is an animated and comical performance that
brings together hip-hop beats with tongue-twisting rhymes as Baba stows
away on a tour bus full of famous rappers, finding himself in the midst
of a storytelling battle.
Taking on three Chaucer characters, The Pardoner, The Miller and The
Wife of Bath, Baba Brinkman puts the medieval text into a modern setting
in this clever, original fusion of hip-hop and poetry that has been
well-received by audiences the world over.
Displaying a great sense of irony and excellent comic timing, Baba
delivers a show that, whilst definitely remaining true to the original
text, makes you almost forget that this is Chaucer. The three characters
adopt the personas of modern day rap stars, with The Miller even
claiming to be sponsored by Miller beer, and Brinkman throwing in his
own ‘Rhyme Renaissance’, described as ‘Five million years of history in
five minutes’ for good measure.
After heading to Wigan as part of the Words 06 festival following a
successful, five-star rated performance at 2004’s Edinburgh Festival,
Baba Brinkman now embarks on a three month tour around Britain.
