The Best Damn Thing - Avril Lavigne

Image: Avril Lavigne - The Best Damn ThingAvril Lavigne often gets a bad rep amongst the music press and the record buying public. She’s accused of being something of a Spice Girl for the Myspace generation, cashing in on the revival of guitar-based music in the late 90s and early 200s with her power-pop ditties of issues critics say she’s probably too young to even understand.

If you ask us, this is all highly unfair.

Alright, so she’s never likely to be inducted into the same musical Hall of Fame as the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Spinal Tap, but as her latest LP, ‘The Best Damn Thing’ proves, she ultimately creates really fun, upbeat pop music.

Opening up with recent single ‘Girlfriend’, which for all the world reminds us of ‘Hey Micky’ with added punk attitude and a totally US-centric point of view, and slamming her way through twelve tracks of well crafted, sing-a-long pop songs that you can’t help but believe would sound awesome live, Miss Lavigne has put together a great little album, and it’s hard to deny that it’s a whole host of fun.

It’s all simple, uncomplicated stuff, but it works well, and as for any remarks that Avril can’t understand the things she’s talking about, well frankly, that’s nonsense. Lyrics are earnest and straight to the point.

“I hate you now, so go away,” she sings on the riotously enjoyable ‘I Can Do Better’. It’s hardly Middle Eastern politics is it? And after all, who hasn’t felt like screaming such plain and simple words to somebody in the past?

There’s a great feeling of 80s bubble-gum pop to be found here too, such as on title track ‘The Best Damn Thing’, which sees the diminutive songstress inciting a round of “hey hey! Let’s go!” over a bout of hand-clapping and basic drums before launching into the kind of bold and bright tunes that inspire joyous dancing, arms flailing in the air and huge smiles on faces.

Say what you want about Avril Lavigne, you’ve gotta give the girl her dues, she’s done a grand job with ‘The Best Damn Thing’.
