Welcome to the Play Section!
"We don’t stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing." George Bernard Shaw

The Play’In Out Team will be in action again during the holiday periods all throughout 2008 visiting lots of local outdoor play spaces and indoor venues across the Borough.

Our team of playworkers will be organising a variety of play based activities for you to enjoy whilst you are off school. Activities will vary everyday as the team have a vast range of play resources and they like to encourage the children to make decisions about what they want to play, wherever they go you can guarantee that they will be doing something for everyone to enjoy.

All play sessions are FREE. There is no need to book in advance, as we are an open access service. This means you can just turn up and are free to come and go as you please. Although our play workers will be there to make sure you have a great time, they will not have sole responsibility for your child on this session.

The Play’In Out Team will endeavour to include ALL children 5 –13yrs within it’s play sessions. To help us provide a quality play opportunity for your child, please contact us prior to the session of your choice, and inform the team of any specific support needs your child may have.

Play Activities
The Play Section organises programs of supervised activities both indoors and outdoors for children throughout the year including school holiday periods.

  • On Wednesday the 6th of August this year is the biggest event in the play calendar where all the Play Section come together for one day with a FREE event for all children. This year the theme is 'Give Us a go' and the activities will all be based in and around Lilford Park Woods in Leigh. We can now confirm some of the activities, including; archery, a climbing wall, willow weaving, mud pools, den building, crafts and much more! "We would love children to turn up on the bikes and explore the woods for themselves, and we are encouraging everyone to bring along a picnic for on the day… lets hope for sunshine, but if not turn up in your wellies and be prepared to get mucky!"

* The team are always looking for new places to visit and new groups to meet. If you work with children 2-13yrs or know of a group of children that would like a visit from the Play’In Out Team, please do not hesitate to call the team to discuss a play session in your area.

Norley Hall Adventure Playground
In 1985 a group of local residents got together to discuss the lack of play facilities on Norley Hall estate. In February of the following year local volunteers, community workers and children themselves helped to drain the land and build play structures. The play structures were made using materials such as old telegraph poles and railway sleepers. The local schools soon got involved with the project and Norley Hall Adventure Playground was created. Two workers and a pool of volunteers staff the playground with funding coming from Leisure, Housing, Health and Education. The adventure playground grew out of a movement dedicated to children’s freedom of expression in an outdoor environment and has changed over the years and is still developing in response to changing needs and changes in legislation. Always at the heart of these changes is an ethos that children need a chance to explore, test, create and rebuild their world freely in their own way.
