Wigan Pier Theatre Company
Outreach Theatre Development
Need to add some theatricality to your
work on the Victorian period? The renowned Wigan Pier Theatre Company
will bring their repertoire of live interpretation to your school,
college or venue. These scenes have worked for the last 20 years at the
Wigan Pier museum and we now have the capacity to bring costumed
characters direct to you.
Solo Victorian Scenes
- Victorian Schoolroom – the
famous classroom experience of 1901, with hymns and prayers, a lesson on
the three C’s of Lancashire, nit and lice inspection and much more!
Tailored to suit your age group.
- Fire Damp – A young man goes
to work in the pit where a few weeks previous he was caught in an
explosion which killed a number of men including his dad. He finds the
atmosphere of his colleagues hard to fathom and replays the day of the
incident and the follow up events including the enquiry over in his
head.
- Pit Brow Pride - Returning
home from a shift at the Pit, Mary finds the door the house locked. She
suspects it has something to do with the crowd gathered nearby bothering
her family. Why? Because she is to be married to the boss’s son which
has caused problems on both sides of the social divide. As she waits to
gain entrance she lets the crowd know what she feels about them and
their opinions and attitudes towards her.
Duo
Victorian Scenes
- High Days and Holidays –
Seaside scene
Frank and Victoria sit in the sun on their two days away in
Blackpool, the holiday destination for hundreds of Victorian
families. Victoria has been working hard to get the money together
after Frank promised that this year they could do everything on
offer from high tea in one of the posh cafes to a turn on the big
wheel. Now that they have arrived Frank is not so sure that the
boarding house holiday is worth the money.
- Mixed Pairs and Matrimony
– Market Square scene
Joe practices his marriage proposal with one of the audience when he
hears Ivy coming. Ivy wants to practice for the clog dancing for the
local Mixed Doubles competition. Joe doesn’t really want to clog but
doesn’t want to upset Ivy so he can pop the question. Inevitably
there are confusions along the way as they both try to get what they
want.
- Rent – Domestic scene
Alice and Josh live in a miner’s cottage. Alice who usually works in
one of the local mills is on strike and is having to take washing in
to make ends meet. They are trying to save for a holiday, but times
are hard, as they also need to pay for all the weekly debits. It is
pay-day for Josh and they work out where all the money needs to go.
