Wigan Pier Theatre Company
Community Partnership Projects
One of the core aims when developing the
“Pier into the Future” initiative was to encourage partnerships with
organisations who had thought of or wanted to use the performing arts in
their work.
• ‘Say the Word’ – a performance created to help young people think
about issues around relationships, safer sex and contraception. A script
and associated workshops were commissioned to tour colleges and young
people’s groups. This was our first professional touring production and
feedback was extremely positive. Plans are now underway for performances
around other health-related issues.
• ‘Down Memory Lane’ – a performance stemming from a series of
intergenerational workshops with the theme of ‘local dialect’ . WPTC
worked on this project with the Borough’s Over 50’s Forum, Shakerley
Community Partnership and Hindley Community High School.
• ‘Age Matters’ - an intergenerational project with young people and
adults from Worsley Mesnes and Positive Futures resulting in a
performance at the annual Partnership Convention.
• ‘The Way We Want To Be’ performance created through a series of
workshops and in partnership with Wigan and Leigh SCOPE. This work has
also developed to regular inclusive theatre and arts weeks for young
people.
• ‘Haigh Fever’ - was a promenade performance project in Haigh Hall
presenting the history of the building. In partnership with four Wigan
High Schools, Haigh Hall and the Education Department, this project was
made possible with Heritage Lottery Young Roots funding.
• ‘Home Front Recall’ - working with professional actors, visual artists
and four primary schools on a VE celebration project including singing,
art workshops and culminating in a street party.
Workshops projects
• Community Cohesion workshops: a joint project with young people from
Wigan and Leicester, Positive Futures and Wigan Council Community
Engagement team.
• Various school holiday workshops with Education Department Support
Services and Turnpike Community Theatre.
• The ‘Saying Hello’ project, in partnership with Age Concern, the
University of Salford, local artists and WLCT’s Arts Development team,
explored issues of loneliness and isolation with older people in the
Borough culminating in a publication.

Community Partnership Projects
Events
Through our development we have taken on an event co-ordination role for
voluntary arts performance events. These have included:
• Co-ordinating a new performance and visual arts festival at Haigh
Hall, ‘Arts for All’, as part of the Arts and Festivals Strategic Arts
Initiative.
• Co-ordinating the ‘Arts Factor’ celebration event which launched the
new Arts & Festival Strategy for the Borough.
