Mondays were washdays - on Tuesday Victorian Mums did the ironing!
The Flat Iron was heated on the kitchen range. It was held with a
cloth and ironing was done on the kitchen table. To test if it was
hot, a little water (or spit) was splashed on. If it sizzled, it was
hot!
